Week 4: Civics and citizenship through geography Year 5, Blog Post By the end of this lesson, students will understand the meaning and effects of climate change with a focus on The Amazon rainforest, while also learning ways they can minimise their own impact on climate change. Why is this important? Students are our future generation, educating them about climate change is crucial for a sustainable future. Environmental education begins in schools with all citizens of the school community being responsible for the teaching of sustainability see figure 1 (Commonwealth of Australia, 2005). If education on climate change does not occur in schools, the future of farming, deforestation and burning fossil fuels will continue to have a negative effect worldwide. Week 2: Civics and Citizenship Year 3, Parent/Guardian Blog Post Students are given the opportunity to shape their lives, become active citizens through positively contributing to their local community and have an opinion on matters that affect them and their future through engagement with The Australian Curriculum: Civics and Citizenship (ACARA, 2014). This unit of work will commence two weeks prior to Clean up Australia Day. Allowing students to develop an understanding of the long term effects humans actions have on the environment, prepare them with a set of crucial skills for becoming an active citizen such as responsibility, integrity and respectfulness, and being informed about the issues occurring in the world around them (Dejaeghere & Tudball, 2007). Students will be shown the image in Figure 1, before engaging in a class discussion about why they think this image is an issue.
